While most of the year is spent focused on working hard for ourselves, National Day is surely a time for all of us to revisit our love for the nation. What better way to love the nation than by ensuring its long-term sustainability – through the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!

Sad Saga Of The Saiga
60 critically endangered antelopes, called the Saiga Antelopes, were shot dead in Kazakhstan last month. Their horns were removed and their carcasses were abandoned at the arid steppes of Northwestern Kazakhstan. Saiga Antelopes are often poached for their horns which are exported for the global Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) trade.

Most TCM stores that sell bottled "cooling drink" such as barley or chrysanthemum also sell drinks made of saiga horns, at a premium price of approximately $5 per bottle. One local brand even marketed the drink under a harmless, generic name "cooling water" (see picture attached).

When buying a bottle of "cooling drink", consumers can check the ingredient list for the compound "Cornu Saigae Tataricae", which is the scientific name for the horns of a Saiga antelope. Most consumers of the cooling drink do not seem to know that the drink is made of a critically endangered antelope.

Sequel to The Story of Stuff
Inspired by the well-received The Story of Stuff, creator Annie Leonard released the follow-up to the video presentation called The Story of Change. Focusing on what people can do to change the system, this video zooms in on what people can collectively do to help improve the world – on top of individual day-to-day individualistic or consumer-identified ideas such as 'I can buy fair trade' 'I can take a reusable bag to the store', 'I can ride my bike'.

Take a look at the preview clip at http://youtu.be/RDiRUiLay30 or visit the main site for the campaign at http://storyofchange.org.
