When Vegans Get Cancer

The school holidays are typically a time when families spend more time together but, unfortunately, there are no holidays for animals in the factory farming sector. This Father's Day, why not make the special occasion meaningful as well by going veg for that dinner or lunch?

Veggie Thursday Initiative Leads to Convert
In April's issue of BBC Good Food magazine, Veggie Thursday's lead activist Natalia Angel was interviewed on her philosophy and journey into veganism for the section 'My Life on a Plate'. The full-page article was well-received by the readers and one person in particular, Ms Sophie Mercer, wrote in to say how inspired she was by the article and that she had incorporated a weekly meatless day into her lifestyle as a result.

The article on Natalia and the letter by Ms Mercer (which was published in the June issue) can be read on the Veggie Thursday facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/veggiethursdaysg. More information on BBC Good Food, which has reportedly increased its coverage on vegetarian cuisine in recent issues, can be found on its official website - http://www.bbcgoodfood.com.

Inducing Eateries to Provide Healthier Fare
While there has been an increased availability of veg food options here in Singapore, the common gripe that many could be healthier still rings true. One keen activist has proposed to spearhead a campaign to encourage veg eateries here in Singapore to provide healthier versions of their dishes.

His proposal includes getting members of the veg community to be the main agents who engage the eateries in an informal, familiar and sustained approach that can be the most effective in nudging eateries to offer healthier choices.

In addition, patrons should interact with owners or chefs of establishments that they visit regularly and share information or ideas on healthier cooking to those eateries, and also blog about their experiences, plans and efforts.

While the development of this initiative may take time to formalise, you can still do your part by engaging the food establishments that you patronise and encourage them to move towards providing healthier options.

And if you would like to be part of the movement and join this activist in launching this initiative, then do drop us an email at info@vss.sg.

Satay By The Bay Searching for Veg Food Vendor
Reminiscent of the old Satay Club, Satay by the Bay will open sometime in September this year in Marina Bay and comprise over 20 food stalls set beneath canopies of green roofs with natural ventilation from the waterfront. The operator of the 2,000 square metre mass casual dining space, Planar One & Associates, is looking to include one veg food stall among them, so those interested to explore this opportunity should call the operator directly at 62731217 to make enquiries or register their interest.

B12 Oral Spray Supplement in Singapore
Vitamin B12 is not readily found in plant sources, so ensuring its adequate intake in the diet is something every vegetarian and vegan should look out for. The good news is that there is now a vitamin B12 oral spray supplement available in Singapore! It is formulated with the preferred form of Vitamin B12 with Methylcobalamin, and is convenient and easy to use - just spraying 3 times a day into the mouth will provide 600mcg of vitamin B12. It can also be sprayed onto food or drink to be consumed together.

The spray, being brought in by VSS corporate member Vegdot, is now retailing at a discounted price of $19.90 at several outlets such as Bamboo House, Create Healthy Lifestyle, Four Seasons Organic markets and Green Apple Pharmacy. You can find out more about this supplement by visiting http://fount.vegdot.com.sg/purchase.

So Clear That Even a Billionaire Can Understand
A video has recently been swimming around the internet of Bill Gates speaking at a public event. In it, Gates discusses that in the future, we will get to a place that science will allow us to make vegetarian 'meat' products that are cheaper, more efficient and better for the planet.

The following is an unofficial transcript of what he said:

"… Getting people to have enough food is an incredible thing.

So all these companies that are taking the animal products - the milk, the eggs, the chicken, the beef - are actually coming up with ways of using largely plant based materials - soy, peas and a variety of things - to make these things, that are both cheaper and probably more healthy, less cruelty involved, less greenhouse gas emissions; it's quite a phenomenal thing, people can be enthused for any of about 5-6 different reasons.

I think it's a huge thing. As well as things that will confound the pessimist, because when they look out, they see this increased intensity of animal product consumption as part of increased income and it should be about what people want, but the fact of innovation will give them the equivalent without those negative facts at lower prices. I think it's an amazing example of how this sort of linear projection misses what innovators using science will be able to do."

You can watch the video clip yourself to fully appreciate the views expressed by the iconic 'man behind Microsoft' at http://youtu.be/YrhU7h9WftQ.

China Xiamen International Vegetarian Food Fair this October
The 4th China Xiamen International Vegetarian Food Fair will be held from October 19 to 22 at the Xiamen International Conference & Exhibition Center, China. Touted as the first fair with the theme on Vegetarian Food, Environment Protection and Health in Mainland China, the food fair will be co-located with the 7th China Xiamen International Buddhist Items & Crafts Fair, the 3rd China Xiamen International Tea Fair and China Xiamen International Tea Packaging & Processing Fair 2012, offering a great platform for visitors to get a more comprehensive experience while facilitating better exposure for booth participants.

The last installment of the food fair received great support from vegetarian food lovers and industry experts and participants benefited tremendously from the forum. This edition will adopt a new format so as to offer more time for each speaker to elaborate on his points.

To take up a booth at the fair, the organisers are accepting registrations at http://www.vffair.com/En/index.asp, while visitors can fill out the online form at http://www.vffair.com/En/RegVisitor.asp to obtain the free official catalogue, enjoy favourable prices when making hotel reservations as well as get visa invitation letters as necessary.

Cancer the Forbidden Cures Documentary
In the last 100 years dozens of doctors, scientists and researchers have come up with the most diverse, apparently effective solutions against cancer, but none of these was ever taken into serious consideration by official medicine. Most of them were in fact rejected out-front, even though healings were claimed in the thousands, their proposers often being labelled as charlatans, ostracised by the medical community and ultimately forced to leave the country.

At the same time more than 20,000 people die of cancer every day, without official medicine being able to offer a true sense of hope to those affected by it. Why?

This full length documentary film is absolutely relevant and deserves public awareness - especially interesting is the part about how remedies from natural plant foods will never be approved, patented or accepted by the medical industry.

A good case to suggest that all possible cures to diseases have always been in plant sources. Catch it now at a computer near you by visiting http://youtu.be/BTGye7kA6rM.

When Vegans Get Cancer
Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, an 'ardent' vegan according to Wikipedia, died last month of colon cancer at the age of 62. A dietician who has had 3 of her veg friends also die from this disease discusses why vegans and vegetarians may fall victim to the notion that they need not worry or inform themselves about various illnesses because they are confident about their 'good' dietary practices.

A timely reminder that our choice of a plant-based diet puts us on low risk but it doesn't mean that there is no risk. You can read the full article at http://www.theveganrd.com/2012/05/when-vegans-get-cancer.html.
