Staying Healthy and Youthful Through a Vegetarian Diet

Dr Sanjay Doshi is an M.D. who specialises in anti-aging medicine at Mediline Wei Min Clinics, a general practice that focuses on holistic patient management. In an encore performance, Dr Doshi will be speaking for VSS at the Changi Room of Tampines Regional Library, on Sat, 18 Sep, 3.30-5pm.

Dr Doshi’s VSS talk focuses on types of food that can help us maintain our youth, thus slowing down our aging process, and on the overall health benefits of a vegetarian diet.
 
After the talk, our friends at Singapore Vegetarian Meetup - http://www.meetup.com/singapore-vegetarian - are organising a meetup at 6pm at the Happy Arts Deli: 32 Simei St 1, S(529950). The Deli is located at the Metta School, on the corner of Simei St 1 and Simei Rd. It's just a 7-8 min walk from Simei MRT station. The Deli features local favourites, organic brown rice and vegan baked goods. If you are interested in joining the meetup, you need to visit the Singapore Vegetarian Meetup website and sign up. Meetup participants pay for their own meals.

Special World Veg Day Offer

1 October is World Vegetarian Day. Eight Treasures Vegetarian Restaurant, 282A South Bridge Road, S. 058831, Tel: 6534.7727 - www.8treasuresgroup.com.sg - has issued special invitations as their way to welcome non-vegetarians to share the day. First, 20 VSS members can bring along a friend (preferably non-veg!) to enliven this special occasion. All the VSS members and guests need do is to email their names and contact numbers to Eight Treasures at 8treasuresgroup@live.com to confirm their participation by 20 Sep.
 

Eight Treasures has also kindly extended a similar invitation to 20 Vegvibe Magazine - http://vegvibe.com – readers. Eight Treasurers’ great idea is to make World Vegetarian Day even more meaningful by educating more people about vegetarian cuisine. They want non-vegetarians to experience for themselves that vegetarian fare is very much not what it is usually perceived to be: all deep fried and oily, unhealthy, tasteless and unexciting.

World Veg Congress in Jakarta – 1 Oct

VSS will be participating in the International Vegetarian Union (IVU)’s World Vegetarian Congress, beginning 1 Oct in Jakarta. Check out the Congress’s impressive new website: http://www.wvc2010.org. And, it’s not too late to register for the Congress, with reasonable airfares and budget accommodation, including free transport to the Congress venue.

Veggie Thursday

VSS is cooperating with 25 other organisations – including Nature Society (Singapore), AWARE, ACRES, Singapore Environment Council and One Singapore – to encourage people to go veg every Thursday or whatever other day of the week suits them. We call this Veggie Thursday (VT), and we hope that it will launch in late October.

Letter to the ST Forum Page

A few weeks back, some VSS members were among those interviewed for a Sunday Times article about the etiquette of ethical eating, with one VSS member saying that she and her groom to be would be serving only veg food at their wedding because they didn’t want “blood on our hands”. The article brought forth a cavalcade of letters and even a Straits Times editorial, plus part of the article (but not the part about the wedding) was reprinted in the Malaysia newspaper, The Star:

The following letter was sent to ST by a VSS Exco member, but it wasn’t published.


 

I refer to the letters in ‘Food: Everyone has the right to choose’ (Life!.mailbag, 4 September). I choose vegetarian although I do understand that meat dishes can be tasty, that eating meat can be a way to enhance social links with others who are also eating meat and that certain meat dishes may even enhance my status among certain people. I choose not to eat meat because the lives of the animals whom I would be eating seem more important, and because I can enjoy tasty food and warm social ties via veggie food, too.
 

On a more selfish note, I think about what would happen if people from another planet (see photo above) came to Earth and took a liking to the taste of humans, such as me. With their superior technology, this other species could do to us what we now do to chickens, pigs, cows and others. I wouldn’t want that kind of life for myself or anyone else, humans or other animals.
 

I’ve been making the vegetarian choice for 30 years. Maybe it’s not the right choice for everyone, but to me, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. And, along the way, I’ve eaten lots of great food and enjoyed the company of lots of great people.

Danger on Egg Farms

This U.S. tv report explains unhealthy conditions on large factory egg farms in the U.S. which have contributed to the recall of huge numbers of eggs. And, near the end of the news segment, just look at the crowded conditions the chickens must endure. Awful!

Meat Wastes Water

Water is a precious resource. That’s why we have NEWater and are moving towards desalinated water. Meat production not only pollutes water, due to the huge amount of liquid and solid waste produced by the animals whom we eat, meat production also uses more water than does the growing of plant foods. Here are some stats on that:

For instance, it requires 70 litres of water to grow an apple and 80 litres for 2 slices of wheat bread, but 1937 litres for 1/8 kg of beef and 487 litres of water for 1/8 kg of chicken.

“Were Those Vegan Cupcakes Really That Good?”

“Of all the shows we’ve done, the thing I hear the most is, ‘Were those vegan cupcakes really that good?’” Ms. Candace Nelson said. “People are in sort of disbelief that this vegan chef beat out the rest of the competition. My answer is yes, they were delicious. It was everything we were looking for in a cupcake.”
