Staying Healthy and Youthful Through a Vegetarian Diet

Last year, Dr Sanjay Doshi’s NLB talk for VSS was so popular that the talk attracted about 50 people, 20 more than NLB had been planned for. This time, NLB has given us a larger venue at a larger library: Changi Room at Tampines Regional Library, on Sat, 18 Sep, 3.30-5pm.

Dr Doshi is an M.D. who specialises in anti-aging medicine at Mediline Wei Min Clinics, a general practice that focuses on holistic patient management. His VSS talk focuses on types of food that can help us maintain our youth, thus slowing down our aging process, and on the overall health benefits of a vegetarian diet.

Back By Popular Demand: Trip to NANAS

Earlier this year, VSS organised a successful day trip to Noah's Ark Natural Animal Sanctuary (NANAS). Many who went want to go again, and many who couldn’t go want another chance.

So, all set for Sun, 3 Oct. Details at:
VSS members receive a discount.

Launch of VegVibe Print Edition

After a year online offering 12 monthly issues, Singapore’s independent vegetarian magazine, VegVibe launched their print edition and has become a bi-monthly print magazine as of Sep. The inaugural print issue (Sep/Oct 2010) was launched on 29 Aug at the Central Library. A VSS representative spoke on links between vegetarianism and the environment and animal welfare movements.

VegVibe has printed 3,000 copies for the first print issue and encourages readers to read their copy and pass it along to others so as to maximise its usage whilst reducing wastage. Subsequent issues will be released on the 15th of each odd month (i.e. November, January, March, May, July and September). The print edition will continue to be provided free and will be available at various partner locations around Singapore. An identical virtual copy will also continue to be released online and you can be notified upon release of each issue via email.

The VSS InBox

Last issue, we talked about the importance of B12 for vegetarians, and we suggested some places where B12 supplements can be purchased. Readers wrote in with the following advice.

1. It is always wise to seek professional medical expertise about our diet and our health generally.

2. A vegan supplement containing B12 is available by mail order from The Vegan Society in the UK - www.vegansociety.com/shop - at £4.99 for 3 months' supply for an adult (6 months for children under 12) plus postage. There lots of info about B12 on www.vegansociety.com.

3. Essential Living carries Solgar B 12 in mini-easy to swallow capsule. Stores that carry Solgar Vit B12 are as follows:

Brown Rice Paradise - Tanglin Mall
SuperNature - Orchard Boulevard
Eat Organic - Bukit Timah
Onaka - Biopolis
Specialist Compounding Pharmacy - Biopolis
Plant & Planet - Centrepoint
Green Apples - River Valley
Yes Natural - Tiong Bahru

Dr Esselstyn Featured in New Documentary

Dr Caldwell B Esselstyn, Jr, whom VSS plans to bring to SG in March 2011, and his diet play a prominent role in this documentary about three people and their struggles with heart disease or diabetes:

Here’s a synopsis:

Root for Charles, John and Garnet as they try to buck the system of pills and procedures and outfox their heart disease and diabetes. When their doctors inform them they can’t get better, our intrepid trio tells the doctors to think again. Charles, John and Garnet decide to take on their diseases by drastically changing their diets. We all know making resolutions is easy; sticking to them is the hard part. With lighthearted animation, piercing expert interviews and a feisty attitude, CHOW DOWN is the moving story of the success you can achieve when you rewrite the recipe for a healthy life.
