Pasir Ris Mangrove Stroll

We often hear people complain that Singapore has nothing to offer lovers of the great outdoors. They are so wrong. For example, Pasir Ris Park offers a wonderful opportunity to discover the marvels of mangroves. That exactly is what you can do with VSS on Sat, 28 Aug, beginning at 3pm.

Staying Healthy and Youthful Through a Vegetarian Diet

Last year, Dr Sanjay Doshi’s NLB talk for VSS was so popular that the talk attracted about 50 people, 20 more than NLB had been planned for. This time, NLB has given us a larger venue at a larger library:

Changi Room at Tampines Regional Library, on Sat, 18 Sep, 3.30-5pm.
http://golibrary.nlb.gov.sg/Event.aspx?EventID=33741

Dr Doshi is an M.D. who specialises in anti-aging medicine at Mediline Wei Min Clinics, a general practice that focuses on holistic patient management. His VSS talk focuses on types of food that can help us maintain our youth, thus slowing down our aging process, and on the overall health benefits of a vegetarian diet.

On the Radio Again

Our last issue reported that VSS members had called in to advise Gold 90FM DJ Hossan Leong on protein in veg diets. We were back on the radio again, Fri, 13 Aug, when word went around that 938Live would be discussing shark fin.

We spread the word via Facebook and Twitter. In fact, we might have done too well at spreading the word, because when the DJs asked listeners to call in, the lines were jammed.

If we had gone on air, we would have seconded what one of the DJs said about sharks being capable of feeling pain, fear and psychological stress. And we would have added that scientific evidence is also revealing that fishes are far more intelligent than many people may believe. They have long-term memories, social structures and problem solving abilities; some fishes have even been seen using tools.

But our favourite argument in favour of sharks is to ask: What if aliens came to Earth and started eating us? What if they took a particular fancy to one of our body parts, such as our thumbs? Just because they were smarter than us and more technologically advanced, would it make it right for them to eat ‘human thumb soup’?

This concept is on display in the following cartoon:

Where To Find B12 Supplements

Our last issue discussed the importance of B12 and reported that many scientists believe B12 isn’t available for human absorption in plant foods. Thus, it may be useful to take a B12 supplement. VSS did a bit of investigation to locate B12 supplements that contain no ingredients of animal origin. However, we have to rely on what the manufacturers state about their products’ content.

Where to find B12 supplements? Your favourite organic shops may have vegan B12 supplements. Also, vegan B12, such as Blackmore’s B12, is available on the internet, and local entrepreneurs market B12 and other supplements that may be of interest to vegetarians.

Below is information on whether some of the large chains of stores sell B12.

a. Guardian says that they do not have any vegan B12
b. Holland & Barrett has
c. GNC has
d. Nature’s Farm has
e. Watson has a brand called Webber Naturals but only at the following outlets: Terminal 1 (departure hall), Terminal 3 (B2), Parkway Parade, Ngee Ann City, Northpoint, Raffles City, Lucky Plaza (currently under renovation), IMM, Harbourfront.

Of course, this information will change. Let’s hope that the change is towards more outlets offering vegan B12. Please send updates. Thanks. And, pls remember: Don’t play, play. Take your B12 today!

The answer is simple: become a Seeds of Hope GIRO member - http://www.vegetarian-society.org/seeds-of-hope - or a life member - http://www.vegetarian-society.org/Join - and never again worry about renewing :)

Top Raw Chef Visits SG

Chef Matthew Kenney had already been a top chef for when in 2002, he accompanied a friend to a raw vegan restaurant in New York City, where he was struck by the mental and physical clarity he felt upon dining. Inspired, Chef Kenney learned all he could about raw cuisine and organic ingredients, and in 2004 opened Pure Food and Wine in New York. Chef Kenney’s latest book, Everyday Raw Desserts will be published this month and will be followed by Everyday Raw Express and Raw Chocolate in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Four Seasons Hotel is bringing Chef Kenney to SG from 11-17 Oct, when he will be introducing an exclusive menu and doing cooking classes. More details here.

Relax Guys: Soy Won’t Make You Grow Breasts

Lots of myths exist about soy. This recent research review helps put many of them to rest:
http://www.soyconference.com/magazines/jun10.pdf

Here’s an excerpt:

A new study published in Fertility & Sterility has found that soy does not have feminising effects on men. The review, by Dr Mark Messina, examined published data from over 150 clinical studies to critically evaluate the effects of soy isoflavones on men. Results show that soyfood consumption has no effect on circulating levels of testosterone or estrogen, sperm count, semen quality, breast size or erectile function in men and concludes that there is no evidence indicating that the isoflavones or other components of soyfoods exert feminising effects on men.
