Smoothie Demonstration at Geylang Serai CC

Demand is increasing for the VSS smoothie workshop/demo. Last weekend, we did a demo at Geylang Serai CC for newly arrived domestic helpers. We’ve done them to teachers, office workers, students and others.
 

We emphasize that the smoothie is a quick, easy way to boost our health at the same time that we protect the planet and show concern for our fellow animals.
 

Some people think that it must take a long time to make a smoothie. For example, earlier this month, a VSS member was at SGH to donate blood and started a conversation with one of the nurses about the smoothie he had made for his wife and himself that morning. The nurse couldn’t believe that a smoothie with banana, gogi berry, flaxseed, apple, raw oats, brown sugar (for iron for blood donations) and sunflower seeds could be made so fast. Not only is it quick to make, but a smoothie is fast to cleanup, without any of the grease from cooking meat.

Global Warming

Last year, VSS was one of the main local organisers of the International Day of Climate Action: http://www.350.org
 

Sadly, the situation with global warming seems to be getting worse, not better. Next week, VSS is attending a meeting to consider plans for future activities. If you’d like to help educate the public about the link between meat and climate change, please contact us at info@vss.sg

In 2009, VSS launched this guide to approximately 80 veg restaurants. It is given free to new VSS members and sold to others. Of course, all such guides need frequent updating as the vegetarian food scene continues to grow (and, sadly, some outlets close). We hope to launch the updated version in the next few months.

Raw Food Meetup in a Park - 25 Jul

Catherina Hosoi, who did a very successful cooking class for VSS, is running more classes on her own on healthy vegetarian Japanese cooking.

Meat Linked to Early Puberty in UK Girls

A study at the University of Brighton (UK) involved 3,000 girls and found that those who ate more meat were more likely to start puberty earlier. Early puberty is thought to increase risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and heart disease.

Going Veg May Reduce Toxins

A study recently published in the journal Environmental Health, reported that people who ate a vegetarian diet for just five days registered lower levels of toxic chemicals. In particular, levels of hormone disrupting chemicals and antibiotics used in livestock were lower after the five-day vegetarian program. This pilot study suggests that we can lower our exposure to potentially dangerous chemicals through dietary choices, such as limiting consumption of animal products such as meat and dairy.

Book on Being Flexitarian

‘Flexitarian’ is a fairly new word. It means someone who is usually vegetarian but occasionally eats meat. Flexitarian diets fit an overall trend, especially in developed countries, towards eating less meat, for reasons of health, environment and/or compassion.

Singaporeans’ Diet Preferences Survey

Our friends at VegVige - http://vegvibe.com - are conducting a very brief survey on the dietary preferences of Singaporeans with a view to providing a snapshot of the percentage of Singaporeans who are vegetarians as well shed light on the types of vegetarians there are here (e.g. religious, ethical, 'only take eggs' etc.). It is hoped that this survey - the first of its kind - will enable VegVibe to call for a larger academic and/or governmental study into the dietary preferences of Singaporeans.

As of now, VegVibe has collected over 150 responses and are looking to gather as much more responses as possible by end-July (i.e. the more respondents, the stronger the findings) before reporting findings in August. Interestingly, preliminary analysis of the responses thus far suggests that even amongst non-vegetarians, 13% do not consume eggs and 21% do not consume dairy. Encouragingly, almost 70% of the non-vegetarians polled are flexible with their diets (i.e. are not 'die-hard' meat eaters).
